An opinion editorial by Dr. Laura Laffrado, the Director of
the Ella Higginson Recovery Project and professor of English at Western
Washington University, has been published in the Seattle Times. The op-ed piece
discusses the development of the Pacific Northwest, particularly the Seattle area,
through the words of an Ella Higginson essay titled “The New West” published in
1892.
“She [Higginson] could not have imagined the immense
population of the region today and what would be needed to support such massive
growth. But she rightly feared the changes to come,” Laffrado writes.
