"June Night"

June Night

The sunset burns along the hill,
And all the stars come out too soon,
And lovely, restless Venus lies
In the curled arm of the moon.

Venus, thou art a light-o'-love!
Now by the ardent moon caressed,
Midnight shall find thee trembling down
To the sea's strong, throbbing breast.

"June Night" as it appears in Ella Higginson's When the Birds Go North Again (1898).
